YOKOTA TOKYO was pleased to present a two-person exhibition featuring On Kawara and Tomoharu Murakami.
On Kawara consistently created the Date Paintings of Today series —marking dates that are universally recognized and shared by us all. Tomoharu Murakami, by contrast, has layered his paintings through the continual accumulation of daily prayers, crystallized in paint. While their artistic approaches differ greatly, both practices are presented to us as profound engagements with the question of human existence.
We were honored to have the opportunity to exhibit these two artists together in the same space. As works by two artists who pursued sincere and unwavering practices throughout their lives encounter one another, what might we come to perceive? This exhibition was, in part, an exploration of that very question. We hoped it will offer visitors a place for quiet contemplation.
Our gallery held On Kawara: Today in 1986, and has maintained an ongoing program of solo exhibitions by Tomoharu Murakami since 1978. The present exhibition is an extension of these long-standing activities.
