In order to tackle the restrictions of flatness and frontality of painting, Natsuyuki Nakanishi had been attempting to show the painting as a physical boundary between the “world of painting” and reality. Nakanishi was a mediator between the two worlds, standing in front of the paintings. His attempt was realized through the act of painting and through creating the series of works entitled Touching Down on Land and Touching Down on Water.
As a part of our Raum-one work series, we exhibit Nakanishi's As a Thing–Toward Violet. The exhibition questions the one-to-one relationship between the viewer and the painting, in parallel to showing an example of Nakanishi's relentless approaches to painting.
