YOKOTA TOKYO was pleased to present “Isamu and Kao Wakabayashi — watashi no ie (My House).”

Sculptor Isamu Wakabayashi created toys for his daughters.
Dolls, houses, and cars fashioned from thread spools were crafted from materials close at hand, imbued with gentle warmth and an unexpectedly sculptural presence. Objects that might once have been merely things are here animated by viewers’ imagination, lifting them out of the everyday into realms of fairy tales and science fiction.

As forms that are both toys and sculptures, they allow us to glimpse artists’ domestic scenes, inviting us to return to our own nostalgic moments.
In them, viewers may encounter unexpected aspect of Wakabayashi’s artistic practice— an aspect of gentleness in spite that his well-known iron sculptures seem to be signs of strength.

To accompany the exhibition, Kao Wakabayashi’s artist’s book "watashi no ie" featuring a newly written text by the artist, was published in a limited edition.
